About AU - OC

The Orange County chapter of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State started in November 2004.   We are young and growing and making plans in support of the national chapter.

What We Do

The mandate of the national chapter is to cover these issues:

The Orange County chapter is proud to be following in the footsteps of the national organization.

Monitoring School Boards

In Orange County over the past year there have been a number of issues on school boards.

  • Westminster School Board attempted to prevent language in the school board policy based on the California Gender Non-Discrimination Act of 2003 because of their religious beliefs.
  • Santa Ana School Board makes multiple references in their school board meetings in the promotion of anti-gay beliefs as well as opposition to sex education.
  • County-wide there have been issues on Boards requiring intelligent design or creationism taught regardless of the opposition of students and their parents.

Monitor Stealth Candidates of the Religious Right

The Religious Right has become very active in politics both at the local and national level.  However, their views are not always popular with main stream voters, so candidates often hide their true agenda when seeking election.  Exposing these "stealth candidates" helps to keep the electorate informed of the truth about these candidates and their right wing religious agenda.

  • Huntington Beach.  In the last election cycle there were stealth candidates of the religious right running for the School Board.
